Gone (for now) are the days of frosty mornings, chilly floors and icy windscreens. Say hello to spring! Spring is the season of new life – from baby animals to blooming flowers and yep, you guessed it – bringing your lawn back to life!
Springtime is a great time for lawn growth, but before we get carried away by the luscious, green blanket that’s about to flourish across your yard, there’s a few things we need to do in order to have the best possible lawn this season.
Spring Turf Tip 1:
Keep your lawn as hydrated as yourself! Okay, well more specifically, the watering needs of each lawn is determined by the type and location (sun, shade, regional, coastal etc) however, now is the time to increase your lawn watering schedule.
During winter, your lawn doesn’t need as much attention. It’s kind of like a mumma bear in hibernation, you let it sleep. But with the increasing temps, your soil and lawn is going to T-H-R-I-V-E when you give it some of that good H2O.
Spring Turf Tip 2:
It’s mower time! Thank goodness it’s not a 2020 remake of ‘hammer time’ because we don’t even know what that would look like. But in all seriousness, like your lawn – the sleepy mumma bear – your mower has likely been a little more dormant. We recommend you do the following:
- Service your mower
- Sharpen or replace blades
- Check fuel, filters and spark plug
By shaking off your mower’s winter chill, it’ll be ready to rumble for spring.
SpringTurf Tip 3:
We’re going to keep rolling with this mumma bear analogy because it works. It’s feeding time!
Fertilising your lawn for spring, with a quality spring blend like our Spring Blend Lawn Fertiliser is a must-have if you want growth, growth, growth. Specifically designed for the warming climate, this fertiliser feeds, nourishes and strengthens your lawn into that delicious green blanket we’re all dreaming about.
Did you know that our Spring Blend fertiliser lasts up to 3 months? So, when we say we’ve got your springtime covered, we aren’t lying.
Spring Turf Tip 4:
Fertilise BEFORE you aerate or top dress your lawn. Try and give it at least 1-2 weeks after fertilising before you start ripping out the serious lawn manoeuvres.
Aerating creates channels, or we like to think of it as snorkels, for oxygen, water and nutrients to reach the roots.
After months of heavy traffic (a.k.a rolls and tumbles in the grass), and the cold winter rain, the soil underneath your lawn can become compacted. We don’t want that! Compacted soil can cause your lawn to become hard, and essential oxygen and water can no longer penetrate and filtrate through the soil, resulting in a sick lawn. Spring isn’t for the sick – spring is for new life and growth!
How to aerate
There are several options available to aerate your lawn which is fantastic, as there’s likely something here that is best suited to you and your needs.
- Aerate using aerating sandals
- Tubular lawn aerator
- Petrol powered lawn corer/aerator
You can find these tools at your local hardware store and even as a tool hire. However, if DIY is not your style, you can simply leave it to the professionals.
Spring Turf Tip 5:
Dress to impress. Well, kind of. Your lawn is bound to be the ‘green carpet’ where everyone wants to be, so top dressing your lawn is essential if you’re chasing that consistent, luscious lawn.
Top dressing offers a new source of nutrients to your lawn and can even level out an uneven lawn or fill holes – which makes mowing easier. It’s a win-win!
Spring Turf Tip 6:
Replace your lawn.
Sometimes, winter pushes the lawn over the edge and there’s just no coming back. So while we sadly have to say goodbye to our deceased, dry lawn, there’s no better time than spring to establish a new one!
Establishing a new lawn in spring is ideal because,
- The work is less sweaty
- There is less watering required
- And there’s increased growth thanks to the warmer temps.
