When we think about our lawns, we usually focus on the visible parts.

Broad leaf or fine leaf? Dark green or bright green? How often does it need mowing? Sir Grange or Sir Walter DNA Certified? Will the neighbours notice that we chose the premium variety?

But there’s one thing most people glaze over entirely.

The very thing feeding your lawn, holding water, and supplying nutrients to the roots.

The soil.

Get the soil wrong, and even the best turf in Brisbane will struggle.

Why Soil Matters More Than You Think

Healthy soil = healthy lawn.

Your turf relies on the soil to:

  • grow deep, strong roots

  • hold moisture without becoming waterlogged

  • allow oxygen to reach the root zone

Without the right soil structure, grass can’t establish properly, no matter how great your watering or mowing routine is.

And unless you’re shopping for astroturf (in which case, you’re definitely in the wrong place), turf is a living, breathing organism. It needs sunlight, water, and food.

Grass makes its own food through photosynthesis, using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. For that process to work efficiently, it also needs nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and trace elements, all of which come from the soil.

Sunlight is dictated by your yard.

Water comes from irrigation and rainfall.

Soil quality? That one’s on you.

Most Brisbane yards don’t naturally contain the ideal nutrient balance for turf, and even well-prepared soils can become depleted over time.

That’s why proper soil preparation and maintenance matter so much.

How Much Soil Do You Actually Need?

For a clean, professional finish:

  • Soil levels should sit 20 - 40mm below paths, pavers, and edging.

  • The shape and level of your soil will become the shape of your lawn, so factor in drainage and water flow now (not later)

The Best Soil Types for Turf in Brisbane

For Brisbane conditions, most turf varieties perform best with a  Sandy Loam Mix.

This blend allows:

  • good drainage

  • strong root penetration

  • adequate nutrient retention

You can source this from local landscaping suppliers or directly through GoTurf Brendale.

Soil Preferences by Turf Type

Adaptable to Most Soils

  • Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo

  • Nullarbor Couch

Prefer Sandy Loam Mix (80% sand / 20% loam)

  • Zoysia Sir Grange

  • Zoysia Australis

  • TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda

  • Stampede

Common Soil Mistake: Compaction

One of the biggest soil problems we see is compaction, and it’s usually just under the grass, in the top layer of soil, where foot traffic from people and pets gets packed down. The air gets squeezed out, and a hard layer remains. Water then tends to lie on top; the roots, microbes, and worms that normally thrive in this area find it hard to survive, and the lawn struggles as well.

Compacted soil restricts:

  • water movement

  • oxygen flow

  • root growth

If your soil feels hard underfoot or water pools on the surface, compaction is likely the culprit.

How to Fix It

  • Aerate the area using a garden fork or aerator sandals

  • For larger areas, consider hiring a motorised aerator

  • Consider adding a sand-rich topdressing-mix to work into the aeration holes and provide better drainage and airflow.

The Takeaway

Your lawn is only as good as the soil beneath it.

Get the soil right, and your turf will establish faster, require less maintenance, cost less in the long run, and simply look better (because it is better).

If you’re unsure what soil your turf needs, or whether your existing soil is suitable, get in touch with the GoTurf team. We’re happy to help or take care of all that preparation and installation work for you.

For now, we’ll leave you with this: great lawns don’t start with grass, they start with the foundations it grows from.
