Laying your new lawn in South East Queensland?

This one’s for you, especially if you’re in Caboolture, Brisbane, Bribie Island, the Sunshine Coast, Noosa, Ipswich, Gympie, Toowoomba, Gatton, Kilcoy, or the Gold Coast.

We grow turf for these regions, in this region.

The GoTurf farm is based in the Glass House Mountains near the Pumicestone Passage, so we know a thing or two about planting, growing, and caring for turf in every season.

So, when is the best time to lay a new lawn?

Any time of year is a good time to lay turf in South East Queensland.

Not just summer, spring or autumn, but winter too.

All year round.

Why do people think otherwise?

Every September, we see the floodgates open.

Everyone wants their turf down the second the weather warms up, with plenty of time for it to establish before the summer holidays.

And honestly, we get it. A lot of turf advice comes from cooler climates where timing really does matter. Frost, low sunlight, and dormant grass will affect growth.

But that’s just not the reality here. We don’t deal with extreme cold in SEQ. Thanks to our sunny skies and subtropical climate, your lawn can establish itself in any season.

So while the advice isn’t wrong, it’s not relevant to this part of the country.

The real risk isn’t winter.

If anything, a bigger concern for new lawns in SEQ sits at the other end of the scale.

Summer heat and pallet burn.

This is more about how turf is handled than the weather itself.

Turf that sits too long on a pallet on a hot day can heat up from the inside. The grass can start to break down and begin composting before it touches the ground. This is called pallet burn, and it’s completely avoidable.

At GoTurf, we harvest in the early morning, monitor temperatures, and make sure your turf arrives fresh and fast.

Once it’s delivered, the priority is simple:

Lay it as soon as possible, on the same day.

That matters more than the season.

What actually changes throughout the year

There are a few practical differences depending on the time of year you lay your turf.

Watering

Water is everything when establishing a new lawn. We recommend watering new turf immediately after laying, then consistently over the following weeks to help it establish.

In summer, you’ll need to stay on top of it even more, as heat can dry it out quickly.

In autumn, winter, and spring, you’ll usually need less, as you’re not competing with the same level of heat.

Timing your use

In Queensland, turf typically takes 2 to 4 weeks to establish and around 6 to 8 weeks to fully settle in. Summer turf will grow and establish faster, but you’ll still need to stay off it while it takes root.

So if you’re planning family gatherings, entertaining, or school holidays in the backyard, it’s worth laying your turf well before that.

The takeaway

In South East Queensland, we’ve got flexibility when it comes to laying turf.

You don’t need to wait for a specific season. Instead, focus on what really matters:

  • laying it promptly

  • watering it properly

  • giving it time to establish

So the real question isn’t when you can lay turf.

It’s how much you need, which variety suits your yard, and where we’re delivering it.
