Now, in Australia, the term “lawn grub” is often used to cover more than one type of pest. It can include beetle larvae, like curl grubs, and caterpillars, like armyworms. Understanding which pest is in your lawn is the first piece of the puzzle.

So without further ado, here’s all of our best advice on treating lawn pests, plus the products you need for treatment and prevention, so you never find yourself here again (hopefully).

Armyworm: Identification and Treatment

How Do I Know If I Have Armyworm?

Armyworms can bring a healthy lawn to its knees in a matter of days if left untreated. Here’s what to look for:

Physical characteristics

  • 2 mm to 40 mm in length (mature caterpillars are 30–40 mm)

  • Three prominent white or cream stripes running down their back and sides

  • Smooth to the touch with no obvious hairs

  • Curl up when disturbed

  • Four abdominal prolegs

Detection methods: The best time to go looking for armyworms is during the evening when they’re most active.

Torch method: Kneel at the edge of damaged areas at dusk. Spread the grass open with your hand and slowly run a torch across the lawn profile, looking for caterpillars feeding or moving.

Soapy water test: Mix a small amount of dishwashing detergent with water in a bucket. Pour it over a small area at the edge of a struggling or scalped lawn. Watch for 10 minutes — if they’re there, armyworm caterpillars will rise to the surface to breathe.

How to Treat Armyworm

Time is of the essence! Armyworms can wreak havoc quickly.

Treatment steps:

  • Mow your lawn

  • Apply a fast-acting liquid insecticide to the leaves in the afternoon.

  • When armyworms become active in the evening, they'll feed on the treated leaf.

  • Repeat applications over the upcoming weeks to ensure complete eradication.

Recommended products

Now, this guide highlights the LSA products we stock in-store; alternative treatments may also be suitable depending on your lawn and pest type.

Battle Insecticide – Liquid insecticides provide faster, more efficient treatment than granular products for armyworm.

Prevention:
Use preventative products like Grub Guard Ultimate or Acelepryn for long-term protection.

Black Beetle: Identification and Treatment

Adult African black beetles are common in Queensland lawns and are a natural part of the ecosystem. They rarely cause significant harm.

The real problem occurs during the root-feeding larval stage, which is commonly called lawn grubs.

Lawn Grubs: Identification and Treatment

Watch for these warning signs:

  • Increased bird activity: Grubs make a tasty snack

  • Greyish-brown moths at dusk: Flying above the grass to lay eggs

  • Brown patches that won’t recover: Lift the grass; if it rolls up like carpet, the roots may be gone

  • Spongy lawn underfoot: Often indicates larvae below the surface

How to Treat Lawn Grubs

Because grubs feed and reproduce quickly, you must act with haste.

Treatment timeline:

  • Apply treatment as late in the day while adults are active

  • Reapply in two weeks to catch the next generation as eggs hatch

Recommended products:

Please always read the bottle or package for safety instructions and application rates. This is very important.

Year-Round Lawn Pest Prevention Tips in Queensland

While fast treatment is important, prevention is always easier than lawn repair. Reduce the chances of future infestations by:

  • Maintaining a healthy lawn with a strong fertilising schedule [read our fertiliser guide]

  • Mowing regularly and avoiding scalping (this can weaken grass and attract pests)

  • Watering deeply but infrequently to encourage strong root systems

  • Applying preventative grub treatments for long-term protection

A strong, well-maintained lawn is naturally more resistant to armyworm, grubs, and beetle larvae.
