If it were up to us, everyone in South East Queensland would have a perfect lawn.
However, we’ve seen some common challenges arise with turf selection and installation, particularly when advice is sought after the turf has already been purchased or installed.
Most of the time, the mistakes are made before the turf even arrives on site.
Typically, we’ve found most turf regrets boil down to these three choices:
-
choosing the wrong turf variety
-
skipping proper preparation
-
leaving installation too long after delivery
Here’s how we can make sure you avoid them.
1. Choosing the wrong turf for your yard (this is the big one)
This is where most turf troubles start.
There’s a big difference between premium turf varieties grown for Australian conditions and cheaper blends that only perform well within a narrow range of conditions, often with higher maintenance requirements.
In some cases, people think they’ve purchased a specific variety like Sir Walter, but later realise it wasn’t sourced through an LSA-accredited grower, which creates confusion around what they actually have and how to care for it.
It’s not just premium vs non-premium turf, though; a variety that needs full sun won’t fare well in a shaded yard, and a turf that simply can’t hack high levels of wear and tear won’t perform its best in a high-use backyard.
The issues usually show up later as patchy coverage, uneven growth, or in worst cases, a lawn that never properly takes off.
The most common mistake? Not knowing what you’re actually looking for.
The best turf variety is the one that suits your yard, lifestyle, and vision. Sun, shade, kids, pets, climate, maintenance, all of it needs to be considered before you hit “add to cart”.
2. Skipping proper preparation
If turf is the finish, preparation is the foundation.
And this is where lawns can quietly go wrong. This is what we don’t want to see:
-
not fully removing old grass
-
ignoring proper soil depth
-
poor levelling or drainage
-
rushing straight into laying turf
The problem is, once turf is down, it’s not so easy to fix what’s underneath it.
So if the foundation isn’t right, the issues might not show up immediately, but they will be seen, felt and most likely, headache-inducing.
From uneven growth and dry patches to poor root establishment, no turf variety can fix a bad prep job.
3. Delaying installation after delivery

Turf is alive. Once it’s harvested, its roots are cut and need to get back into the ground ASAP.
After pick up or delivery, leaving it stacked on the pallet for too long is one of the quickest ways to ruin your new lawn. In South East Queensland, pallet burn (i.e. when the turf gets so hot it effectively starts composting on the pallet) is a major risk, especially in the warmer months.
If you’re delaying laying your turf, the best case is that it takes longer to establish.
Worst case, it never establishes, and you’re back to square one.
The sooner it’s laid, the better. Fresh turf is harvested for the ground, not the pallet.
Premium vs non-premium turf (why it actually matters)

If you’re wondering what we mean when we say premium vs non premium, premium turf varieties are:
-
bred and tested for Australian conditions
-
more consistent in colour and growth
-
more resilient under stress (heat, shade, traffic)
Now, lower-grade turf can still look good, but often requires more water, more maintenance, more fertiliser, and dedication to perform well long-term.
The difference isn’t about the appearance (though it might win you over), but more so about how much work it’ll take to keep it looking good and what conditions it can hack.
How to avoid all of this

The easiest way to avoid problems later is to:
-
Choose the right variety for your conditions.
-
Prepare your yard properly.
-
Install it quickly after delivery.
-
and match turf quality to your expectations
A great lawn isn’t complicated, but it is intentional.
The right turf in the right yard, installed properly and promptly, makes for a great lawn that will last the test of time.
