Thinking about getting Sir Walter for your place? Most of us are.

According to Lawn Solutions Australia (Source), since 1997, over 100 million metres of Sir Walter Buffalo turf have been sold Australia-wide, the equivalent of around 750,000 homes.

We’ve all seen it, our neighbours probably have it, and there’s a good reason why it’s the default choice for a lot of backyards.

It’s versatile, tough yet soft, and easy on the eyes.

But here’s the part a lot of people miss: not all “Sir Walter” is actually Sir Walter.

Sir Walter vs Sir Walter DNA Certified

Long story short, there are a lot of impostors out there, and Sir Walter DNA Certified is the real deal.

In late 2015, Lawn Solutions Australia introduced DNA testing across its member network to make sure the Sir Walter being grown and sold is the genuine product people expect.

Sir Walter DNA Certified is only grown and supplied by Lawn Solutions Australia members (and we’re one of them). Every grower submits samples for testing, which are matched against the original Sir Walter plant, the same one that’s been kept pure since it was first bred. That’s what gives it the DNA Certification and Original Breeder Guarantee.

Why you should choose Sir Walter DNA Certified

If someone’s selling “Sir Walter” and they’re not accredited, there’s no real way to know what you’re getting.

It could be a different buffalo. It could be a mix. It could be Kikuyu for all we know.

And the tricky part? Most buffalo grasses look pretty similar at first.

It’s only later, when it’s not handling shade as you expected, or it needs way more work than you signed up for, that you realise something’s off.

That’s why we can’t talk about the benefits of Sir Walter DNA Certified without first making sure we’re talking about the same turf.

Why do people keep choosing Sir Walter DNA Certified?

There’s a reason it’s everywhere; quite simply, it just works for most yards.

  • Handles sun and shade (a big win for QLD backyards)

  • Holds up with kids, pets, footy - whatever gets thrown at it

  • Stays green year-round with minimal fuss

  • Soft underfoot and low-allergenic, perfect for kids and pets

  • Doesn’t need constant attention; you’ll enjoy it more than you maintain it.

The low-maintenance part

If you’d rather spend time enjoying your lawn than maintaining it, Sir Walter DNA Certified is a strong contender for your yard.

It’s got a tight growth habit, which helps:

  • Keep weeds out

  • Repairs itself when it gets worn.

  • Avoid those pesky bare patches.

It also establishes a solid root system quickly, so once it’s settled in, it handles dry periods better than most people expect. Keep it around 3–5cm, give it the basics, and you’ll be laughing.

Shade, heat, and QLD conditions

This is where Sir Walter DNA Certified really earns its keep, especially in South East Queensland.

Some lawns need full sun all day, or they struggle. Sir Walter is a lot more forgiving.

It can handle as little as 3–4 hours of sunlight a day, thanks to its broader leaf, which absorbs sunlight more efficiently than the finer varieties.

We grow it in full sun here in the Glass House Mountains region, so it’s proven to handle both full sun and shady spots.

Good for kids, pets… and bare feet

Soft, spongy landing pad.

Sir Walter DNA Certified has a broad, soft leaf, which makes it genuinely nice to walk on.

It’s also:

  • Great for kids running around

  • Tough enough for dogs

  • Considered low allergenic compared to some other options

Whether it’s kids learning to walk or backyard footy, it’s a solid choice for family homes.

How to make sure you’re getting the real thing

Before you buy, just double-check:

  • You’re buying from a Lawn Solutions Australia member (like GoTurf)

  • You can see the Sir Walter DNA Certified logo.

  • You’ll receive a warranty certificate.

If those boxes aren’t ticked, it’s worth asking a few more questions.

Summing up Sir Walter

Sir Walter DNA Certified is popular for a reason; it handles real-life backyards without needing constant attention. Just make sure you’re getting the DNA Certified version if you want all the benefits that come with it.
