How to prepare your yard for turf
Watch the step-by-step process for clearing, levelling and building the correct base before turf installation.
Preparation details that matter
How deep should my soil or underlay be before laying turf?
A minimum of 100mm of suitable underlay or turf sand is recommended to support drainage and root establishment.
Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo and Nullarbor Couch adapt well to most soils. Sir Grange Zoysia, Zoysia Australis, and TifTuf Hybrid Bermuda thrive best in an 80% sand / 20% loam mix.
Proper depth improves long-term performance.
Should irrigation be installed before turf delivery?
Yes. Irrigation systems must be fully installed, pressure-tested and adjusted before turf arrives. Delivery day is not the time for system installation or trenching.
How level does the ground need to be?
Final grading should be completed before delivery. The surface should be smooth, compacted and free from low spots that may cause water pooling or uneven growth.
What are common lawn preparation mistakes?
Common issues include:
- Inadequate soil depth
- Poor drainage
- Delayed installation after delivery
- Failure to water correctly during establishment
Following preparation guidelines correctly protects long-term turf performance. If you have any questions, please get in touch with our team.
